Description:
1894 FACTORY OCTAGON SHORT RIFLE, WITH VERY SCARCE 22” BARREL AND CORRECT ONE INCH SHORTER THAN STANDARD FOREND, .30 WCF CALIBER, #475XXX, MADE 1909. Interestingly, a study was done of the existing Winchester factory records for the Model 1894. The study revealed that there were 2980 rifles made with 20” barrels (generally considered the “standard” short rifle length) and only 2252 made with 22” barrels. The study did not break this number down between round barrel rifles and those with octagon barrels, but it cold probably be assumed that about half were oct. and half were round. Assuming this, one might conclude that only about 1100 would be in the records with octagon barrels- like this example. Obviously, more were made than this as the records only go through 1906 or serial numbers to 354000. Regardless, all short rifles are scarce items with the 22” version more scarce than the 20.” The 8 3/8” forend on this rifle confirms it is a factory short rifle and not simply a cut down standard 26” rifle which would have had a 9 3/8” standard forend. This is a nice example that hasn’t been cleaned or messed with. The barrel and magazine show good very aged blue mixing with a little brown and gray, the receiver also shows some good very aged blue on the sides with considerable mixing brown and gray with fine deep blue on the loading gate. Has a three leaf express rear sight with all leaves intact (!) matched with a small blade front sight. Exc. markings, very good forend with normal handling marks and one hairline crack coming back from the forend tip on the left side for an inch or so- really minor. Butt stock is fine and looks like it may have been very lightly gone over a bit at one time and shows where a sling swivel had been fitted to the bottom. All sounds worse than it is, but I want to mention it. Bore is a bit dark with fine rifling and should clean up nicely. Tight action and strong springs. Most of these short rifles saw hard use and were especially popular in the Southwest and in Mexico. This one is better than most that show up these days.
