Description:
This is a nice example of an all-original veteran bring-back Japanese Type 99 Rifle, 32nd Series made by the Toyo Kogyo Arsenal (Hiroshima Prefecture). It appears to be combat-used but well cared for. It has a partially defaced Mum, and still has the original "airplane sights".  The original factory blue finish is in good condition overall for a Japanese military rifle, still glossy and consistent in color.  The finish wear is honest, and is mainly concentrated at the balance point from being carried.  The bolt body itself shows some finish wear as well, mainly where metal contacts metal when the bolt is worked.  All of these deductions can be seen in the pictures provided, and as you can see do not detract much at all from the great combat-used look of this rifle.  The bore is excellent condition in this Type 99.  There is no visible pitting or imperfections and the rifling is still nice and strong.  The original stock on this Arisaka is in good shape overall and is structurally solid, but shows some dings, dents, gouges, and scratches that you would expect on a Pacific Theatre combat-used rifle.  The wood used on these Type 99 rifles was soft compared to the Walnut used on American Garands and M1 Carbines, so it would acquire marks fairly quickly when in combat.  All of the controls on this Type 99 are in perfect working order, and the action is still solid and locks up tight.  All of the numbered parts on the rifle match the serial number of the receiver except the bolt. This is a later production Type 99 and has no drain holes in the stock or provision for a monopod. The partially defaced Mum and mismatched bolt are indicative of a battlefield pick up during the war. The Japanese troops would typically deface the mum with their bayonets prior to a Banzai charge or surrender (very rare). U.S. soldiers would typically pull the bolts out of captured rifles and pile them up separatley, which is why they are often times mismatched.  If you have been looking to add an honest combat-used Type 99 Arisaka to your collection, here is your chance to get a really nice example.  Gone are the days when an all-original and matching WW2 Japanese Type 99 rifle was easy to find and inexpensive, these vet bring-back rifles are getting very hard to find these days!
