Description:
The Remington Model 8 self-loading rifle was the predecessor to the more often encountered Model 81.  It is a sem-automatic rifle that was produced by Remington from 1906 to 1936.  It is a very unique take-down design that uses a recoiling 22" inch barrel/bolt assembly that rides inside an outer barrel sleeve containing a recoil spring.  It was offered in 4 calibers, .25 Remington, .30 Remington, .32 Remington, and .35 Remington.  The Model 8 uses a 5-shot non-detachable box magazine and came with a plain Walnut straight-grip stock set.  The small wire loop on the forearm screw allows for tool-less take down; by removing that screw you can remove the forearm and access the bolt (which has a integral folding lever for ease of use) that holds the barrel assembly on the rifle.  The Model 8 proved to be a very good self-loading rifle and was put to use by police forces and prison guard units all over the country, and was even included in U.S. military trials during the production period.  As mentioned earlier, Remington produced the Model 8 until 1936, at which point it was replaced by an improved design of the same rifle that was called the Model 81 Woodsmaster.  This particular example of the Remington Model 8 is serial number 48,374, is chambered in .30 Remington, and was manufactured in 1924.  It has been professionally restored at some point and is in 95% excellent condition as-restored.  The blue finish has a great look to it, it is obvious that whoever did the restoration/re-blue was very skilled.  The bore in this Model 8 is in very good condition.  While it shows just a little pitting/darkness in the gooves, the lands are nice and sharp and bright.  The bore is such that there is no doubt that this rifle should still be a very accurate rifle.  This Remington does not have the original rear iron sight on it, but the front sight is in great shape and is intact.  In place of the rear factory iron sight, a really neat period-correct tang-mounted Lyman peep sight was installed on this rifle.  This peep sight folds and locks into position, and is adjustable for elevation.  This Lyman really makes shooting running targets easier, and is much faster than lining up the factory iron sights.  The Walnut stock set on this Remington is very attractive and is in excellent condition overall.  The wood shows lots of attractive figure and grain in it, and it is free from any cracks, chips, or repairs.  The factory stock hardware including the original Remington UMC-branded buttplate is all intact and in great shape.  All of the controls on this rifle are in 100% perfect working order with a nice strong action that goes into battery with authority.  This vintage Remington Model 8 would be an excellent addition to any gun collection as both an investment and a shooter.  With newly-manufactured .30 Remington hunting loads available online it would even be a lot of fun to take a deer with it.
