Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year 1885, .45 Long Colt, ANTIQUE
Serial Number: 115997

Here we have a very desirable David F. Clark inspected Colt U.S. Cavalry revolver with a Colt Archive factory letter documenting the gun shipping to the U.S. Government on Nov. 5, 1885 as part of a 100 revolver shipment.  The gun has not been altered, restored, or messed with since that date.  We have disassembled the gun to inspect all stampings, proof marks, assembly numbers, inspector marks and all parts of this gun are original to the gun.  We carefully Ultrasonic cleaned the parts to remove the 100 years of gunk and crud from the crevices of the gun and properly lubricated the parts and reassembled.  The photos will show all the pertinent markings on the gun.  The 7 ½” barrel has an excellent shiny bore with strong rifling and only a few scattered light pits…a really excellent plus bore for an 1885 Cavalry revolver.  The original blue rates at 75%, all the inspector stamps, partial serial number, and proof marks are crisp and clear, and only scattered freckling with no deep pits.  There has been no “cleaning” or scrubbing on the gun anywhere.  There is faded case color on the frame and hammer, and the original screws are all in excellent and unbuggered condition.  The mechanics of this revolver are excellent, with the timing correct, the notches in the hammer for safety, half-cock, and full cock are distinct and solid,  and the main spring is strong.  The cylinder is marked with 5997 (last 4 digits of serial no.) and D.F.C., as well as a small “s” on the rear of the cylinder.  The loading gate and frame (under the trigger guard) are marked with the assembly number “367”.  The original grips have a very legible and correct cartouche on the left-hand grip representing Captain Frank Heath who was Ordnance Inspector during 1884 and 1885.  There is a small chip on the bottom corner of the left-hand grip. The cartouche and date on the right-hand grip are more worn, which is normal.  There are numerous dings on the bottom of the right-hand grip, likely from a knife or other accessory hitting the base of the grip during mounted travel.  The only slight negative is the “U.S.” stamping on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard has been scratched as an effort to eliminate the attachment as U.S. Government property.  This was commonly done by deserters and/or Indian warriors who captured the revolver during battle.  The stamping is still wholly legible as shown in the photos.  Overall this is a very respectable and correct Colt Cavalry revolver priced where most collectors can afford to enter the game.  This historic piece is priced to sell, so please don’t hesitate.  Thanks for looking!
