Description:

LETTERED COLT Single Action Army in .38-40 WCF C&R

Chicago Shipped in 1904 with Vintage Holster Rig!

Here we present a Lettered Colt Single Action Army Revolver in .38-40 WCF with a Black Leather Holster Rig, made in 1904, in Hartford, Connecticut. This SAA was shipped in 1904 to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company of Chicago, Illinois along with 12 others. This was a natural place to stock up for a trip out West as Chicago was a major hub with a railway running through. The Colt SAA has become one of the most iconic firearms in history, especially with regards to the American West in film. Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt’s began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

This revolver in .38-40 WCF would have made a fantastic companion to a Winchester Model 1873 or 1892 in the same caliber. Interchangeable ammunition for rifle and sidearm was extremely popular in those days, especially in the West, where one could go for a long time without finding a place to restock ammunition. It also came in handy in the heat of a fight when single loading a revolver or rifle was made much simpler if one only had a single type of cartridge to shove in the gun. This one comes with a fantastic vintage black leather belt and holster rig, complete with belt loops and thigh strap. Though no maker’s mark is visible, it is of high quality and will fit about a 30-34 waist over a normal belt.

The overall condition is very good plus. This 6-shooter was reblued at some point and stayed in use long after that as about 60% of the blue remains. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The bore is clean with good rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. The holster is in near fine condition. Here is a great example of a prototypical cowboy rig in the great .38-40!
