Description:
This is a very interesting Indian military SMLE Enfield that started life as a normal Ishapore SMLE in .303 British in 1928 that was converted to .410 gauge by Ishapore in 1949. The conversion consisted of the barrel being bored out to .410 gauge, a cupped metal plate was inserted into the mag well and then the magazine well was plugged with wood, and finally the rear sight slide was positioned for the shotshell and the adjustment button was removed and the slide was pinned in place. The facility and date in which the coversion was completed was stamped on the left side of the receiver below the safety. These rifles were used by Indian Mililtary guards and police in the 1950's all the way up to the 1980's. It gave the soldiers or officers that were issued them the ability to defend themselves, but with shotshells with limited range and penetration where bullets may cause collateral damage. It also made these rifles of limited value offensively, so if prisoners for example were able to take the gun from the guard they would be outclassed by the guards/troops that respond armed with SMLE's in .303 caliber. This particular example is in excellent condition overall with beautiful original finish on the metal and wood and a perfect mirror bright bore. All of the numbered parts are 100% matching and original. All of the controls on this .410 SMLE are in perfect working order and the action locks into battery perfectly. This has to be one of the nicest .410 gauge Ishapore SMLE's in existence. This very unique weapon would be an excellent addition to any military arms collection and would be nearly impossible to upgrade.
