Description:

CIVIL WAR U.S. Remington ZOUAVE Rifle With BAYONET

Only 12,501 Made for the Union Army 1863-1865

Here we present an antique Model 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle manufactured by the Remington Arms Co., circa 1863, in Ilion, New York. Only 12,301 were produced in contrast to about 1.5 million Model 1861/63s from Springfield and other contractors. The Model 1863 Remington Contract Rifle was an improved version of the U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1855 Rifle. The Model 1863 Remington Rifle was referred to in official documents as the "Harpers Ferry Pattern" rifle. The Model 1863 Rifle has the distinction of being the last percussion rifle adopted by the Ordnance Department and is generally considered to be the highest quality and best designed percussion military longarm. These are commonly known as “Zouave” rifles by collectors. Zouaves were units of light infantry troops known for their colorful and more exotic than standard uniforms. These units were extant in the French Army and there were a few volunteer American units that also adopted these habits.

The right side of the barrel muzzle has a lug for the included saber bayonet and this one includes the saber, which makes an already scarce rifle even scarcer. The brass patch box is similar to the style used on the Model 1855. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and roll stamped with the Federal Eagle and Shield motif above "U.S.". "REMINGTON'S/ILION N.Y" is roll stamped in two lines ahead of the hammer. The left barrel flat is stamped "STEEL" followed by the Ordnance sub-inspection stamp "B.H." (Benjamin Hannis). "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. "U" is stamped on the right side of both barrel bands facing the muzzle. Single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on all of the brass furniture and the lock plate. The left stock flat is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks. The upper mark consists of the script initials "HDJ" (Henry D. Jennings) in a rectangle and the lower mark has the initials "BH" (Benjamin Hannis) with a rectangular border.

The overall condition is very good plus. The blue finish is 50% or better and case colors are visible. Markings are clear. The walnut stock remains smooth and soild with clear cartouches. The bore is in great shape. The action is excellent. Bayonet is also very good. This rifle is a looker with that bayonet and deserves every bit the standout title of Zouave.
