Payment Types Accepted: Cash, Postal Money Orders, Certified Checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover ~ NO CC Fee Description: Smith Carbine Civil War Era , Mfg. Mass Arms Co. .50 cal. The Smith Calvary carbine .50 caliber – had a unique rubber cased bullet. This Civil War arm was an interesting “top break“ breech-loading carbine. This Carbine is .50 caliber, percussion, in nice condition. The Union received almost the entire wartime production of all Smith Carbines, slightly over 30,000 were made. Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and an Alabama Union Calvary unit carried this arm. The serial number of this example is 12008 which is stamped on both the receiver and barrel breach assembly. It is also equipped with a saddle ring and bar. Brass push bar adds some nice color to the Carbine Note : The left side of the receiver, is stamped vertically, with "ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE, U.S.A." They were the distributors of Smith Carbines. Below the address line, also stamped vertically, just behind the ring bar, is "SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23 1857." Towards the front left side of the receiver, stamped at a slight angle , is "MANUFACTURED BY MASS ARMS CO. CHICOPEE FALLS.". The stampings are all still crisp and clear. The inspector mark is “LJR” stamped in cursive with a rectangle border around it. There is another oval stamped on the stock, it is diffi to see the inscription. There is no inspector’s mark that I can find on the barrel. Both the pieces, the barrel and the receiver, are marked 12008. The front sight is a thick brass blade. The rear site has no numbers on it, it moves and it looks to be original too. The rifling is good but shows some pitting. The barrel is nice and with period dark bluing and is very nice for it’s age (could be a period replacement?). The stock looks as if it has been repaired at some point during the war, I think by a US miltary armorer (the second inspestor‘s mark?). Nice oval washer and screw under forend grip wood. Please look at photos. No international shipping. Shipping cost to be determined by location and a time of sale. Thanks for looking.
