The steel has an overall dull gray patina with old sharpening marks along the edge, and scattered areas of freckling on both sides. The obverse has a series of marks, possibly added by the maker: “J.,J." ('J's are inscribed backward). The hilt has an oval shaped, steel guard with dark plum patina, matching ferrule, and a reverse taper stag grip with an expertly made, shaped metal pommel plate with full-coverage floral scroll engraving. The knife is housed in its original leather sheath with steel chape and throat. The leather is intact, but has mild crazing along the surface, and the metal furniture has the same plum-brown and gray patina as the guard and ferrule. This is a fine, late 19th century knife, and would make a great addition to any collection. SOLD Manufacturer: American Model: Bowie Knife |
