Description:
Fantastic L.D. Nimschke Engraved Colt Single Action Army Etched Panel with carved snake & eagle ivory grips! See page 334 in Vol. 1 of the Colt Engraving Book by R.L. Wilson for another Nimschke engraved SAA with the same engraving patterns. The last 2 photos I’ve shown are of serial number 23451 from this book. This gun is serial number 51184 and is accompanied by a Colt archive letter confirming the configuration as it left the factory as a .44/40 cal, barrel length not listed, blue finish, grips not listed and shipped to J.P. Moores & Sons in New York on February 5, 1879 in a shipment of 50 guns. The remarks on the letter indicate the barrel length would have been 7 1/2” and the stocks would have been walnut as those were standard during this time period. The Colt Factory did not start shipping “soft” finish guns for engraving outside the factory until 1881. Prior to that time, it was common practice for retailers to pull a blue gun from inventory and send it to an engraver to fill a customer’s order. The gun is beautifully engraved with all of the typical Nimschke patterns. The engraving remains sharp and deep with very little wear. The is a significant amount of the original nickel remaining. The markings are all clear and well struck. The serial numbers match on the frame, triggerguard and backstrap with the last 4 digits on the cylinder and on the barrel under the ejector housing. There is a very minor amount of pitting on the cylinder. The “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” etched panel is a little faint but all readable on the side of the barrel. All factory applied markings are clear and sharp. The carved, ivory grips are in beautiful condition and slightly undersized to the grip frame. The action functions flawlessly and the bore is very good. This is an outstanding Colt that would be welcome in any advanced collection. I offer a three day inspection period with a full refund if returned in the same condition as it left. Buyer to pay return shipping.
