I am reducing the size of my Combo Gun Collection and am offering several fine examples of German Quality. I have collected these guns over the last 40 plus years. These guns were purchased by me while stationed in Germany. Many of these models were not offered for sale in the US. Most are different configurations of the models that were offered. The following is one of these guns now for sale as my son has informed me he does not desire to carry on my collection. He asked me to sell them as he has no idea how to sell them.
Maker: Merkel Model: 303 EL Exhibition Grade Year of Proof: 1948 and 1950 Caliber: 16/70 Serial Nr.:29806 LOP: 14 1/4 in. Weight: 6lb. 14 oz, Barrel Length: 28 in. Overal Length: 44 3/8 in. Choke: Mod and Imp Extras: Gun made for Exhibition in 1948. Sold in 1950 (e-mail from Merkel stating the history is shown below). Description: This Merkel 303 EL (Exhibition Grade) Sidelock O/U Shotgun in 16/70 from 1948 is a very fine example of German craftsmanship. LOP is 14 1/4 inches. Weight is approx. 6.9 lbs. This Sidelock O/U has very nice exclusive engraving on the side locks with 4 pheasants and a hawk on the right side, 6 Ducks on the left side. Country Side fill. Chokes are Mod and Imp in the 28 in Barrels.
I recently received an e-mail from the Merkel Team in Suhl. This gun was made for an exhibition in 1948 for which it was first proofed. It was sold in 1950 and proofed again at that time.
There are NO importer’s markings anywhere on the gun. Today's value is in excess of $ 25.000. This is truly a great value for an investment or just a beautiful gun to hunt with. This is a fine gun for any collection. It will definitely make some collector or shooter very happy.

Subject: AW: Anfrage Merkel-Kontaktformular EN Waffennummer "29806" Dear Mr. Wise, Thank you for your inquiry. We could find out that the manufacturing of the O/U-Shotgun with serial number 29806 started in 1948. The shotgun seems to be manufactured for an exhibition. It was proofed for the first time in October 1948. We could also find an information that there was a second shot proof in March 1950. We assume that the shotgun was sold in 1950 and that's why it was proofed again. There is no other information available about this old shotgun.

I have owned a Merkel 303e for some time. My children have asked me for some history on the gun. The proof dates are a little confusing. One is 10/48 and the other is 8/50. I have a feeling this may have been produced before the war and proofed after the end of the war. Any history you may give me is greatly appreciated. I am an avid collector.
