Description:
This is a very nice all-original World War 2 Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 Arisaka rifle in 7.7 Jap fresh "out of the woodwork".  It is a very attractive rifle with a solid original stock set, despite the ground Mum.  This rifle is serial number 85727 and was part of the 6th Series manufactured by Nagoya, which was the very first series of "transitional" guns as the Japanese sought to speed up production and lower costs as much as possible as the Allies kept the pressure on.  Long gone were the days when the Imperial Japanese Military ran roughshod over the Pacific Theatre.  More and more land was being lost daily and the Japanese supply system was beginning to fail.  By the 11th Series the Nagoya Type 99 would hardly resemble the weapon that Nagoya made in the 1st Series.  This particular rifle exhibits an overall lessor degree of fit and finish from previous production, as well as 4 of the first design changes/deletions.  The first of these 4 changes are the rounded plum-shaped bolt handle was changed to a faster and easier to machine cylinder-shape.  The second change is the deletion of the aircraft-sights on the rear sight, the flip-up adjustable ladder sight was kept but the fold-out wings were deleted entirely.  The third change is the lower barrel band was simplified and the monopod was deleted.  Finally, the fourth change was the push-button cleaning rod release was replaced with a simple screw-in stud.  All of these changes saved the arsenal both time and cost, making the Type 99 much faster to build with less skilled labor.  As you can see from the pictures provided, this rifle has a great combat-used look to it.  The original "military blue" finish on the receiver, bolt, and barrel is in good condition overall, with a consistent patina to it showing some wear and handling/use marks you would expect to see on a combat rifle but no major damage.  The factory chrome-lined bore is excellent, with no pitting, dents, bulges, or visible imperfections.  The original stock set is in great shape overall with no cracks, chips, or repairs.  The handguard and 2-piece buttstock are perfect matches, somewhat uncommon in these later production guns.  All of the controls are in perfect working order on this Type 99 and the action locks up tight.  We have no doubt that this rifle would shoot just as well today as it did when it left the factory some 75 years ago.  If you have been looking for a nice Nagoya Type 99 for your collection this unique transitional 6th Series rifle would be a great choice.
