Description:
This classic vintage Mannlicher Shoenauer Model 1905 Take-Down rifle is one really neat and classy piece.  These were considered to be superb rifles in their day, built with the finest materials available by some of the very best gunsmiths of the time.  This excellent reputation has stood the test of time, and these Mannlicher Shoenauers have a substantial following in the collectible market as both investments and sporting/hunting rifles.  This Mannlicher Shoenauer Model 1905 Take-Down is serial number 844 and was manufactured in 1915.  It has a 22.5" inch barrel and is chambered in one of the larger MS cartridges, the 9x56mm MS round.  This Model 1905 Take-Down appears to be all original except for an added recoil pad and the receiver which has been drilled and tapped for the vintage Redfield optics bases which come with the rifle.  This rifle has some very cool features not commonly seen on other rifles.  There is a flush mounted pop-up rear peep sight in the upper tang to go along with the barrel mounted express sights.  The spring loaded peep sight pops up with the push of a button, and has two elevation settings to match the two-leaf barrel mounted rear sight.  The take-down design is ingenious, and is both easy and fast to take apart, but yet solid and strong when put together.  To take the rifle down the steps are: 1. Remove the magazine  2. Remove the screw/pin that runs thru the barrel band, this requires only a couple of turns. 3. Flip the switch at the front of the triggerguard to the right side of the rifle and the whole barreled action and trigger group can be removed as one piece.  The upper rear tang and peep sight remain in the stock.  It goes back together in these three steps in reverse order.  If for some reason you needed to remove the upper tang and peep sight there is a hidden screw under the pistol grip cap.  To access this screw Steyr designed the pistol grip cap to be easily removable by depressing a button at the rear of the cap, and turning the cap counter-clockwise 45 degrees to lift it off.  No small detail was left out in the design of this rifle!  As you can see in the pictures this Model 1905 is still very attractive and is in great overall condition.  The original factory blue finish still looks great with only some light finish wear and handling marks for 103 years of age.  The blue finish has a nice even patina on all of the metal parts with the only heavy finish wear showing on the small area behind the lower rear triggerguard screw.  The bore in this rifle just shows a little bit of frosting throughout but still has strong rifling.  There are no serious imperfections visible and this rifle should shoot great.  The original checkered Walnut stock is in good shape overall with some minor handling marks.  The checkered panels on the forearm and pistol grip still have a lot of texture, and the wrist is crack-free.   The two biggest negatives on the stock are a small toe repair and a Decelerator recoil pad that is not properly fit installed on it.  The toe repair is appears to be properly fixed and is only visible under close inspection.  The recoil pad could be fit better to the rifle or left as-is if the new owner so chooses, or could be replaced all together with a new pad that could be perfectly sized and fit to the rifle.  As it sits now the length of pull is 14.75" inches to the end of the pad.  All of the controls on this rifle work 100% like the day it left the factory in 1915.  The action is very smooth and goes into battery perfectly.  The safety and bolt release works perfectly, and the two-stage trigger is quite good for such a vintage rifle.  The rotary magazine is in excellent shape with lots of spring pressure and is truly a work of machining art.  As mentioned before, this Model 1905 Take-Down comes with a set of vintage Redfield optics bases.  The bases appear to be in excellent shape but are missing the two screws for the front base.  These bases are pictured in one of the photos for this listing.  This rifle would be an excellent addition to any classic rifle collection, or if you have been looking for a classy vintage rifle to take afield for deer or other big game this Steyr Mannlicher Shoenauer would be an excellent choice.  The 9x56mm MS ammo is still available from Buffalo Arms Co. in a 200 grain load that at 2050 fps really packs a punch.  It is not often that we have had one of these fine rifles.
