.50-70 Made Famous During the Indian Wars
Here is an antique Springfield Model 1866 Second Allin Trapdoor Conversion, the rifle being made circa1866 and then converted shortly after that. After the American Civil War, the United States military was slow to adopt new technological advances in firearms and opted to retrofit their enormous surplus inventory of Model 1861 type muskets to fire cartridges. Many different types of conversions were conceived and implemented. This one is named for its inventor, Erskine S. Allin, Master Armorer for Springfield Armory.
These conversions were the main infantry weapon of the West and played a large role in the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. 25,000 Model 1863s received the Allin Conversion, enabling them to be loaded via the breach through a “trapdoor” mechanism.
The rear of the lock is dated “1865” and the front of the lock is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The breech is dated “1865” and marked “EAGLE/US”. Inspector markings throughout the steel parts. There is a "WM. BECK & SON/CIN'TI. O." ownership marking on the left stock flat and a large, compass-like brand mark on the left side of the butt stock. Wm. Beck & Son can be found in the June 1878 edition of William’s Cincinnati Directory described as Wm. B & August C. Beck, Manufacturers of Theatrical Costumes, Regalia and Lodge Supplies, 278 and 280 Vine.
The overall condition is very good. The barrel remains semi-bright and the breech block retains 80% original finish. The markings are clear. The stock is in very good shape with signs of use. The bore is bright with nice rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very neat rifle that saw many years of use and has many a story to tell.
