After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War. This specimen is marked “U.S./MODEL/1873” on the breech block. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. The left side of the stock bears a faint inspector cartouche and the number “19” is located on the left stock. Circle “P” is behind the trigger guard. A small placard also with the number “19” is located near the toe of the butt stock. “19” would have been a rack number, quite possibly for local militia. The overall condition is very good or better. The original blue finish is very nice and has turned plum over the years. The markings are crisp. The walnut stock is in great shape with a few handling marks. The bore is in nice shape with strong rifling. The action is excellent. This is a neat example of a sturdy rifle that saw decades of hard use! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32-5/8 inches. Caliber: 45-70 Government Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
