This matching number Colt Navy .36 caliber 3rd model is in nice shape for being made in 1866, it may have missed the Civil War, but it was carried by some trooper in the West, most likely. It was never coverted to fire a brass cartridge. Someone liked it just the way it was. It shows a lot of holster wear (the brass front site is very low...worn down or filed down, possibly by the shooter)? Maybe the person who carried it had used one in the Civil War and did no want to change the type of side arm that had save him or served him well.
The matching numbers are on the lower barrel frame, the frame, the trigger guard, the cylinder, the frame spindel, the bottom of the back strap, and the barrel wedge! The is very rare. The barrel is marked “-ADDRESS COL. SAML.COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA-“. On the left side the frame and trigger guard are marked “COLT PATENT“, “36 CAL” and a very small “ J “. The wooden grips are nice, but the left side is very rounded by wear. The cylinder still has some of the Texas naval battle scene and date, but was beat up a bit with a tool. Also the cylinder is marked “ COLTS PATENT No 0092”. Almost all the varnish is gone off the wood grips, save the bottom. There is no silver plate left at all on the trigger guard. Barrel is 7 1/2” .
