Description:
This is a rare US cutlass that measures 30 3/4" overall with a 25 1/4" curved, single-edged blade having narrow fullers. The steel has a mottled gray patina with dark spots of freckling throughout, as well as a single nick in the edge near the point of percussion. The ricasso is marked on the obverse: “N. STARR / US"; and also has a partial inspector stamp on the reverse. The hilt has an undented sheet iron guard with traces of flaked black lacquer throughout, and dark brown pitting n the balance. A lozenge-shaped, copper issue tag is present on the exterior of the guard and has “1 S / 2" engraved in the center. The grooved wooden grip has some surface chips just below the ferrule, and has numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes in the thick added varnish finish. The original metal scabbard is included which matches the condition of the hilt and has practically no dents or blemishes aside from the thin freckling and pinprick pitting. This is a very rare American cutlass, complete with original scabbard, and is in fine condition overall.
