Description:

CIVIL WAR Era Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK .41 RIFLE

Handy Falling Block Single Shot Rifle

Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Falling Block Rifle in .41 Rimfire, made circa the early 1860s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Fewer than 2,000 of these rifles are thought to have been made in any variant. Though not standard issue, this rifle saw service in the American civil War through private purchases by soldiers. It features a half-octagonal, half-round barrel with a very neat elevation adjustable rear sight. The rear sight tips and its arm points to various ranges which also have notches which allow the arm to rest in under spring tension. This rifle is equipped with the sling loops ahead of the forearm and under the buttstock. The lowering action of the breech block automatically ejected the spent cartridge. This would have been up against some stiff competition as this was the heyday of the single shot cartridge rifle with the likes of Sharps, Remington Rolling Blocks, Franks Wesson, among many others.

This rifle is slender and handy as well as handsome with its part-octagon, part-round barrel. The top of the barrel is marked “ALLEN & WHEELOCK/ALLEN’S PAT. SEP. 18. 1860”. The butt plate has a cleaning rod trap. The serial number is “57” and numbers match.

The overall condition is very good. The original blue finish is about 80%. The markings are clear. The numbers match. Front sight is absent. The walnut stock shows use and remains solid despite the short fracture to the toe. The bore is clean and bright with good rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very neat old falling block rifle that would have ridden well in the saddle scabbard on the trail.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 26-1/4 inch part octagon.

Caliber: .41 Rimfire
