It featured a then unusual combination of steel and fiberglass in its construction. This helped make the Model 59, at 6.5 lbs. in weight, a very light shotgun. As a result, the Model 59 became very popular for bird hunting, particularly for hunters who had to walk long distances on foot. The 59 featured the Versalite choke – a predecessor to the successful Win Choke. The shotgun currently features a Modified choke. The bore is quite spotless. There is some pitting on the bolt and the follower. The receiver retains much of the bluing. There are a few spots where the finish is gone on the bottom of the barrel. Given the 59’s popularity among bird hunters, the slightly worn condition is not surprising. The 59 would still be suitable for bird hunting even today. In fact, it is still one of the lightest shotguns around. By comparison the new Beretta A400 “Xplor”, designed to be light weight, is still 6.7 lbs. compared to the 59’s 6.5. While lightweight shotguns may be more common today, the 59 must have raised some eyebrows back in the day. Even now, the 59 has somewhat of a following. The 59 would be useful for hunting all kinds of avian game. It is recommended that shooters avoid using heavy loads as this causes heavy wear on the frame and may result in damage to the gun.
