ENGRAVED British FLINTLOCK Pistol by REEVES
CASED HIDEOUT Carry Gun in .50 Caliber
Here we present a cased antique Flintlock Box Lock Pistol by R.G. Reeves, made circa the 1820s in England. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or in the case of a woman, a fur muff or purse. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This pistol is nicely engraved and has a lion’s head mounted on the pommel. It also features a box lock and a twist off barrel, which turns off of the frame for loading. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this diminutive pistol more efficient. This is a quality pistol through and through.
The overall condition is fine. The iron parts have a nice patina. The markings and engravings are clear. The wooden grip is in very nice shape. The bore is fine with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. The case is also fine and it comes with a combination barrel wrench and screw driver. An excellent set!
