Description:

SPENCER 1865 Carbine BURNSIDE Contract Civil War

Antique Saddle Ring Carbine Made in Providence, RI

Here we present an antique Spencer Model 1865 Carbine, made in 1865 by contract by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The Spencer was a very successful carbine that was desirable on Civil War battlefields due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and a captured Confederate soldier is quoted as saying that you “load in the morning and fire all day!” The inventor, Christian Spencer, had the unique opportunity to personally instruct President Abraham Lincoln as he test-fired the rifle, resulting in more military sales.

This specimen is one of the Burnside Contract, making it scarcer than those made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company. Many of these saw use after the war with cavalry units in the American West during the Indian Wars and the settling of the frontier. This one obviously saw some good, hard use. Various parts have single letter sub-inspector initials. The bore has 3 groove rifling.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark gray. Some of the markings are legible while other have been erased by use and the elements. The stock remains solid and shows a lot of use and weathering with a good bit out of the forearm, which has smoothed out like a well-handled rail. The bore is in good condition with sharp rifling. The action is strong. This would be a great piece to put on display to represent just how hard many of these old guns were used during the tumultuous 19th Century. It is also illustrative of just how rugged the Spencer design was that this carbine, having obviously been used hard, still has a nice bore and working action.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.
