Description:
Nice Grade 8 configured Colt 1878, 10 Gauge, Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun.  This 1881 vintage gun is fitted with 32 inch damascus barrels (with engraving), double triggers, attractively engraved color case-hardened frame and side-plates, checkered Walnut forearm with ebony tip, checkered Walnut pistol grip stock with a Colt black hard-rubber butt-plate and silver initial plaque, engraved color case-hardened hammers, and blue finished and engraved trigger guard and lower tang.  The gun is in fine condition, retaining 20% of its original color case hardened finishes, with the rest turning a pleasing silver/brown patina.  The trigger guard/lower tang retain 50% of their original blue finish and the action top lever retains 85% of its original blue finish.  The action is tight and functions perfectly.  The damascus barrels look nice, with nice figure, and the bores are bright, there is a dent on the right barrel (see picture).  All screw heads are mostly un-molested.  The Walnut stock is nicely figured with minor handling marks and no cracks or chips.  The butt-plate is attached with engraved screws, it fits well to the stock and is in excellent condtion, with no cracks or chips. The forearm fits perfectly and is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.  This is a very nice example of a Colt 1878 Double.  Comes with a Colt factory letter stating gun was shipped on April 18, 1881 to E.K. Tryon & Company located in Philadelphis, Pennsylvania.
