Description:

NEW YORK Marked BROWN BESS FLINTLOCK Musket

Made by Barnett of London & Storehouse Dated 1786

Here we present an antique Brown Bess Flintlock Musket, made in London, England by Barnett circa the late 1700s. This musket would makes a fascinating study as there are intriguing markings throughout. The left side of the butt stock bears a storekeeper’s mark with the date “1786”. The left stock flat is marked “V./BY/I.M” with hand-carved letters “LR” over a stamp of “E.P”. The butt plate is unit marked “6 W – L – RT” horizontally and “G/28” vertically. The breech of the barrel is marked with London proofs and “S.N.Y”. This musket is a non-ordnance version of the Brown Bess that coincides best with the Pattern that would become known as the Pattern 1793, though this one is dated “1786”. The “SNY” designates this as property of the State of New York. This musket was likely captured during the War of 1812.

The New York State Militia were heavily involved in two of the four theaters during the War of 1812. That of the Niagara Frontier and the St. Lawrence River Valley. At the Battle of Buffalo, near Ft. George, 50 Americans were killed. Other famous battles in which the New York Militia were involved was along the American-Canada border, Lake Champlain, and the Battle of York. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, the United States military had less than 7,000 regulars. The majority of the battles fought in the War of 1812 were fought by state militias. And while the Battle of New Orleans is the one best remembered, the majority of the battles were fought in the upstate New York area.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are mostly bright. The markings are clear. The stock shows normal military use and remains in great condition. The bore is smooth and dusty. The action is excellent. This is a fine & desirable example of a historical British Brown Bess musket just oozing with mystery.
