Description:

“1818” Dated, “HUUSOM” Signed, U.S. Militia MUSKET

With Name Inscription and Goulcher Lock

Here we present an antique Smoothbore Militia Musket, made circa 1818. This long arm features a long, part-octagonal barrel with a smooth bore and rifle sights. Such a weapon would have been used by militiamen in early America to defend their homesteads and communities against bandits, foreign powers and other hostiles. This one was originally built as a flintlock and was later updated to the percussion firing system for greater reliability. The stock features a full-length fore end that goes all the way to the muzzle and a band-less pinned barrel much like the British Brown Bess musket that was used during the American Revolution. Bore measures .60 Caliber. The inscription is something like “OLE INDEBRET SEN HUUSOM 1818”. This is a Norwegian name stamped crudely into the barrel to mark ownership. The owner of this musket might have been at a loss for some of the character stamps they would have preferred with several characters being of a different size or font, and possibly a character or two turned upside down to get close. Norwegians were some of the first known Europeans to set foot in the “New World” circa 1000 AD. Norwegian immigration to North America began in the 17th Century and proceeded in earnest during the 19th Century, some estimates claiming 1/3 of Norway’s population migrated to the US from 1825 to 1925. These tended to settle in places like Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas, all of which have felt lasting cultural impacts as a result.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a mixed patina. The markings are legible. The stock shows lots of use. The bore is smooth, dark and dusty. The action is strong. Here is a very neat musket showing just a tiny bit of history of Norwegian immigrants to the United States!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 40 inch part octagon.

Caliber: .60 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
