Steven Dodd Hughes, Gunmaker, Writer, Photographer Description: The 3rd Model Smith & Wesson .44 was also known as the Model of1926 and the this one, serial #28618 shipped March 1927 probably to Wolf & Klar. Wolf & Klar was a distributor in Fort Worth, Texas and had the exclusive order for 3rd Model .44 from about 1920. This Model was noramally special ordered and was not cataloged until 1940. This one has a 5” barrel with a very nice bore, and shiny cylinder chambers. It retains most of the nickel refinish with just a few areas of flaking. The revolver function well and lock-up tightly. Frame barrel and cylinder numbers match. It has the hidden cylinder hold-open plunger as you can see in the photo with the cylinder defying gravity. Genuine Mother of Pearl grips are often found on Wolf & Klar guns as the company often replaced the walnut service grips with MOP. These have particularly firey MOP. The hammer and trigger arestamped "Reg. U.S. Pt. Off.". The small S&W logo is morked on the left side and the barrel in rollmarked smith & Wesson with patent dates. All marking are sharp and clear. A great piece of Smith & Wesson histroy and every colletion whould have a 3rd Model .44.
