ANTIQUE WA Marked Percussion POCKET or Muff PISTOL
Mid-19th Century HIDEOUT Carry Gun in .44 Caliber
Here we present a small antique Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1850s. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and well into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or a fur muff or purse. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This specimen features a twist pattern barrel, which turns off of the frame for loading. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this diminutive pistol more efficient. The bottom of the trigger guard is marked “WA”, possibly for “Washington Arms”.
The overall condition is fair. The iron parts have a gray-brown patina. The markings are clear. The wooden grip is in good condition. The top of the frame tang has lost its screw and needs a replacement. The bore is dark. The action has spring tension and remains cocked so it is functional, though it sometimes over-travels due to the movement of the top of the frame.
