Description:

CIVIL WAR Torino “PIEDMONTESE” M1844 Rifled Musket

OHIO Marked Infantry Weapon of the Union

Here we present an antique “OHIO” Marked Piedmontese Model 1844/60 percussion rifled musket manufactured at the State Arsenal at Torino, Italy. The Piedmontese Model 1844/60 was the percussion musket to be adopted by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. Although it retained an older form of a flintlock lockplate, the gun was designed as a percussion musket. Essentially, this gun is a copy of the French Model 1822 Infantry Musket with two distinctive features, which are a small knob on the hammer spur and a rear sight screwed into the breech. In 1860 the barrel was rifled with four grooves to use a Minie Ball type projectile.

In 1862, the Federal Government imported 8,176 of these guns to the United States at a cost of $11.51 per musket. This one, as you can see, is marked “OHIO” in bold block letters. Many such obsolescent muskets were purchased by the State of Ohio for their volunteer militia forces for the American Civil War and many bear these same markings. It features many inspection and acceptance markings in addition to those from Ohio.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a dark patina. The markings are clear. The stock is generally in good condition with the exception of the portion near the muzzle, which has seen some trauma in action and the loss of the front barrel band. The bore is dark with visible rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fascinating historical rifle-musket from Ohio by way of Italy!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 44 inches.
