HANDSOME Mid-19th Century HIDEOUT Carry Gun in .48
Here we present a small antique Box Lock Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1820s in England. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or in the case of a woman, a fur muff or purse. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This nicely engraved specimen features a box lock and a twist off barrel, which turns off of the frame for loading. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this diminutive pistol more efficient. The checkered grain of the grip is higher end and beautiful. The frame is nicely engraved. A very nice and quality concealed carry pistol from 19th Century England. It was likely given as a gift to a young man from Liverpool named Patrick.
The overall condition is near fine. The barrel retains 95% blue with a dark patina on the brass. Markings are clear. Bore is fine, smooth, and clean. Walnut grips are sharp. Action is excellent.
