Description:

Antique HALL-NORTH Model 1843 RIFLED Carbine

Scarce Antebellum Breech Loading Cavalry Carbine!

Here we present a Hall-North Model 1843 Breech-Loading Carbine, sometimes referred to as a “Side Lever Hall” manufactured circa 1850. This model was produced over the longest period of time and in the largest quantities of all of Hall’s many variations.  Simeon North manufactured approximately 10,500 of these carbines between 1844 and 1855. This carbine was carried by the 1st and 2nd US Dragoons during the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, units from Missouri, Kansas, New York, Wisconsin, and Indiana carried them. The 1843 was the focus of the "Hall Carbine Affair" that involved J.P. Morgan Chase purchasing this model from the U.S. Arsenal at $3.50 a piece, having them rifled, and then reselling them back to General John Fremont for $22 each.

The top flat of the barrel exhibits the stamping “STEEL” behind the open rear sight indicative of post 1848 production, and “JH” on the left side of the breech end of the barrel. The carbine has the breechblock thumb lever on the right side of the receiver and extended sling bar and ring on the opposite side. The stock has a faint “JH” cartouche on the left side behind the breechblock. It has a button head iron cleaning rod and is mounted with a smooth one-piece full straight grip stock, secured by two barrel bands, with a smooth flat iron butt-plate.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a mixed patina. The markings are legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is in very good condition and well-rifled. The hammer spur has been somewhat crudely reattached after it was broken off. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 21 inch round.

Caliber: .52 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
