Description:

Ninth U.S. Contract Model 1848 Dragoon Revolver, Third Model Manufactured 1859
  • Factory three leaf rear sight dove-tail mounted on top barrel flat
  • Yoke cut-outs in the frame recoil shields
  • Four screw frame with elongated screws to engage the detachable stock yoke
  • Steel back strap with slot for engaging the stock clamp
  • Rectangular cylinder stops
  • Round brass trigger guard
  • Half round/half octagon barrel with nickel-silver front sight blade
This is one of 932 Third Dragoon revolvers and 462 stocks delivered to the Army between July 1, 1858 and June 30, 1859.  The 2nd Dragoon Regiment was issued 924 of these Dragoon’s and 462 stocks in 1859 for the Mormon Expedition.

The top barrel flat is roll-stamped “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY” READING TOWARD THE BREECH.  The end of this marking is correctly obscured by the three-leaf rear sight dove-tail.  The left side of the frame is roll-stamped in three lines:
  • COLTS
  • PATENT
  • U.S.
  • Tthis Dragoon is nickel plated and bears a factory rework mark on the back strap.  The Ranger and Indian fight scene are not discernible through the nickel plating.

Small single Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks are stamped on major revolver components.  The full serial number (16731) is stamped on (1) the barrel lug, (2) frame, (3) trigger guard, (4) back strap and (5) cylinder.  The loading lever is stamped with the partial serial number (6731).  All serial numbers match.

Excellent condition retaining 85% of nickel plating.  Shows some limited wear but smooth finish with no pitting.  The action mechanics are crisp and strong with perfect lock-up.  Grips are sound and fit perfectly with minor dents and no cracks.  Some wear to toes on both sides.  Ordnance cartouches are not visible.

Colt U.S. Contract Third Model Dragoon revolvers with leaf sights and four screw frame are among the most desirable and difficult to obtain variations of the Model 1848 Dragoon revolver.
