Description:
Identified Civil War Spencer carbine to Private Charles F Cadle, 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Company 'A'. The carbine is .100% original and correct. Serial #56959. This carbine would have been manufactured mid-1864. According to "The Iowa Journal of History and Politics", January 1918- "The Second Regiment of Iowa Cavalry, after it was transformed, in March, 1864, into the Second Iowa Cavalry Veteran Volunteers, was, on the 19th of June, armed with Spencer's Seven Shooting Carbines." At the Battle of Nashville, December of 1864, the 2nd Iowa Cavalry was utilized as dismounted Infantry sustaining heavy loss. Records show Private Cadle enlisting 12-07-1863 and being mustered out 09-19-1865. The Carbine is very good+ condition overall. The metal is a smooth pewter grey, mixing with age brown patina. Mechanics are very good. The bore is mirror bright with strong grooves. The wood overall is very good, with the buttstock retaining some surface dings and handling wear. The buttstock is neatly stamped on the both sides at the top "C.F.CADLE", as well as the right underside wrist. Original sights, saddle bar & ring and loading tube in stock. Spencer markings on top of the breech are all there, slightly worn. A folder on Private Cadle and the 2nd Iowa Cavalry accompany.
