This firearm is a Colt Army Model 1860, cap & ball, .44-caliber single-action revolver with walnut grip, historically used during the American Civil War. A number of this Model revolver were disassembled and refurbished at one point, likely in the the early 1900's. During reassembly no care was given to matching serial numbers, however, on this weapon all serial numbers match. Colt manufactured roughly 200,000 models between 1860 and 1873, with nearly 130,000 purchased by the United States army, making this weapon the most widely used revolver in the Civil War. As such, this exact weapon likely saw combat at one point. My father inherited this pistol from his father in the mid-sixties and it has never been fired since that point, perhaps longer.
