Description:
Rare Colt 1851 Navy with Full Martial Markings, Made in 1856, caliber 36 percussion. Research has turned up a couple of others close in serial number that were issued to Company H of the 2nd West Virginia Volunteer Cavalvry, which saw Civil War action in West Virginia, Virginia (big battles of Lynchburg and Winchester), Maryland, North Carolina, and the Appomatox campaign including the surrender by Robert E Lee at Appomatox Court House. It is possible that this revolver "was along for the ride" in these historic battles.
Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “- ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-”. The left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT / U.S.". The left of the trigger guard is marked "L" at the front and "XK" at the rear. The cylinder, left of the backstrap at the top and the arbor have "K". The barrel is marked "H" on the left in front of the wedge. The hammer slot is marked "H" or "K". The left of the grip has "LCA" for inspector Lucius C Allin in box cartouche at the bottom with "H" stamped at the top, the right "RKHW" for inspector Robert H K Whiteley in box. The rear of the grip, in the backstrap inlet, has "0593" hand-written. The bottom of the barrel assembly, frame, trigger guard and backstrap are each marked "50593". The bottom of the arbor and the top of the loading lever are marked "0593". The bottom of the wedge is unmarked. The outside of the cylinder has a roll-stamped naval scene engraving marked "ENGAGED 15 MAY 1843" and is also marked "COLT'S PATENT No 50593". All markings are extremely clear and sharp.
Barrel Length: 7 1/2", Octagonal
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is one-piece walnut. The grip has several compressions on the butt with a small chip loss at the bottom-front to the right of the grip strap, a chip loss along the rear edge on the right toward the bottom, and some scattered light compressions on the sides. There are no cracks. The grip rates in about Very Good condition as Antique.
Bore Condition: The lands and grooves are fairly bright and sharp. The rifling shows light wear. There is little erosion in the bore. There is a bulge approximately half way down the bore which is visible on the interior and can be felt but only barely seen on the exterior.
This revolver retains about 25% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. The barrel has scattered wear and surface oxidation with bright blue finish still showing in the protected areas, scattered light scratches, and tool marks around the wedge on the right. The frame has mostly gone to gray with some finish remaining, mostly around the recoil shield, some light tool marking around the screw heads and scattered spots of surface oxidation. The cylinder has mostly worn to white with a mottled light patina, a turn line between the stop notches and a scratch line with a lip between the nipples from the hammer. The grip frame has a light mustard patina with some scattered light marks and a concentration of impact marks on the butt. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly disfigured with useable slots. The markings are clear with surprising detail left in the cylinder engraving scene. Overall, this revolver rates in about Antique Very Good.
