EXTREMELY RARE CALIBER AND MODEL: SAVAGE 1899A “SHORT RIFLE” WITH 22 INCH ROUND BARREL, SHOTGUN BUTT, CHAMBERED IN .38-55! #69XXX, MADE 1907. Originally, Savage called this model their “Saddle Rifle” and it is a more scarce model than the usual full length rifles with 26” barrels. Standard Caliber was .303 Savage with .30-30 less common and .38-55 super rare. This one came with an old tag that said “Alaska Wolf Shooter.” Still retains good deep barrel blue with some areas of typical handling wear/thinning, receiver looks an aged dark brown with some splotchy gray mixing. Good blue on the lower portion of the receiver where the lever attaches. Bore is excellent with only light wear. Has a two leaf folding rear sight with a “W. F. Sheard, Tacoma, Wash” marked blade/bead front sight. Probably had a tang sight at one time as the filler screw hole is empty on the upper tang. Fine forearm and butt stock with only a very small hairline crack coming back from the tang for an inch or so- just about all ‘99s have these. Has old style hook-eye swivel stud in the butt stock and the other in the forearm in place of the forearm screw that is probably factory. Steel shotgun butt plate. This is a well used, but cared for Savage 1899 Short Rifle in an almost never seen caliber.
