CIVIL WAR Period Antique FRANCOTTE Rifled Musket
French Model 1822 Musket
Here we present an antique French Model 1842 Rifled Musket, made circa the 1840s by Auguste Francotte in Liege, Belgium. Belgium has long been a worldwide hub for quality firearms manufacture. This firearm was in service during the French Second Republic and the Second Empire under Napoleon III. During the American Civil War, both combatants scrambled to put weapons in the hands of their troops and managed to do so by buying anything they could get their hands on in Europe, including weapons considered obsolescent. This is one such example. Originally produced in flintlock configuration, this musket was updated to the more reliable percussion firing system. It features a .69 caliber rifled barrel. It is marked by the maker on the lock “AG” for Auguste Francotte, a major manufacturer in Liege. It also features Belgian proofs throughout. There is a faint, unintelligible mark behind the trigger guard on the bottom of the stock.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age and have a glossy clear coat over that. Markings are clear. The stock is in good shape with normal handling. The bore is in great shape with nice rifling. The action is excellent.
