Description:
Serial #10742, .303 British, 25" barrel with a good, lightly pitted, two-groove bore. This is a rare rifle that was never accepted for military service, had the original ROF markings removed, and then marked “FOR FACTORY / DEFENCE ONLY" on the left side of the receiver in electric pencil. The metal has retained 75-80% of the original blue finish with the balance turned to a smooth plum-brown patina. The bolt is numbered to a different gun, and never had grasping grooves milled into the cocking-piece. Furthermore, the clip guide has rough welds visible on either side of the receiver, and post-war Birmingham proofs added. The stock and handguards are in very good shape with more crude welds on the bands, and numerous handling marks and blemishes throughout. The left side of the stock has a rack number added in white paint: “63". A wartime canvas sling and magazine (numbered to a different gun) are included. This is a neat No. 4 that was earmarked for home defense use, and rates very good-fine condition overall. FFL or C&R
