Description:
Very rare collection of a World War II Jewish American Naval Aviator. Bruce H. Wolk’s book Jewish Aviators in WWII talks about the surprising number of Jewish Aviators who flew during the war. Included among this much discriminated against group were the Naval Aviators. Anti-Semitism was rampant in many branches of the service and many had to overcome this discrimination to serve their country. They did so with honor and distinction. Some 13,000 of the jewish aviators received the Air Service award. Included with this group are the insignia, rank and medals from WWII naval aviator Hofmann VP831. Hofmann received the Air Service award five times and was twice awarded the Asia Pacific Campaign medal. Rank includes Lieutenant Junior Grade, Lieutenant and Lieutenant Commander. The Naval wings are marked “1/20-10K GF on Ster" and “Vanguard NY". Five medals and ribbons are included: American Campaign; Asia Pacific Campaign (with star); WWII Victory Medal; Naval Reserve Medal and the Air Service Medal (with large Star denoting 5 time recipient). Also included are the bullion stars and Naval Aviator wings. Referenced in the collection is an excellent resource for research American Jews in WWII: The Story of 550,000 Fighter’s for Freedom. A very nice piece of World War II history that is begging for more research at the National Museum of American Jewish Military History. Please see photographs for details.
