Description:
This is a seldom seen and hard to find early yellow two piece box of Winchester .45-70 High Velocity rounds. Introduced in 1903 for this loading the round corner box was made until 1915 when it was replaced with the square corner box. Interestingly this box has the yellow top label but the main side label is off-white and may well have been a very early variant not accounted for in the definitive Giles and Shuey book on Winchester shells. The box is full with 20 rounds of correct cartridges with “w" marked primers, “W.R.A. Co. 45-70 W.H.V." head stamp and soft point metal patched bullets. Condition of the shells is fair with corrosion present on the brass case and verdigris on the head. The rounded box has the top yellow label and off-white front label that calls out the “Winchester Model 1886 Repeating Rifles". The labels are in fair condition with some missing image and starburst label on the side is not present. The box has an overall dark appearance with several issues including very old tape on the top portion that fixed a seam burst and shell break through on the bottom right corner that exposes two of the bullets. Overall a very rare box that is in fair condition.
