Description:
The Stevens Company introduced the Model 620-A in 1940, which was essentially a Mode 620 with an improved method of buttstock attachment that used a thru-bolt rather than the upper and lower tang and screws of the Model 620.  The 620-A is a pump-action repeater with a quick take-down feature allowing the gun to be broken into two halves in less than 30 seconds.  Initially introduced as a commercial model, the start of World War 2 saw the U.S. Military request a riot and trench gun version of the 620-A as well as other Stevens Models.  Due to the demand of the U.S. Government contracts, the Stevens firm halted all commerical production of their shotguns during WW2.  This particular Model 620-A Riot gun is one of the first U.S. Military contract guns that Stevens made.  These early production riot guns feature a factory blue finish, a checkered Walnut stock set, and a 20" inch barrel with a 2.75" chamber marked with 3 astericks ( From 1940 on U.S. Military contract Stevens riot and trench guns were marked with 3 astericks for "Cylinder", and long barreled training guns were marked with 4 astericks for "Improved Cylinder").  The early U.S. Riot guns were all stamped "United States Property" on the left side of the receiver along with a flaming U.S. Ordnance Bomb, "GHS" in an oval (for the U.S. inspector Colonel Gilbert H. Stewart), and a "P" proof stamp.  According to B. Canfield whom has written several reference books on these U.S. Military shotguns, in the reference Complete Guide To U.S. Military Shotguns the known serial number ranges for these Stevens shotguns is serial numbers 7100-9200 for the early production guns and 17000-33000 for the late production guns.  This very scarce Stevens Model 620-A is serial number 8099, placing it in the first contract run.  As you can see from the pictures, this is a very good looking riot gun and it is all-matching with the serial number stamped on the receiver, barrel, and front face of the buttstock (requires removal of the buttstock to see this one).  The original blue finish is still intact and shows a nice even patina with some finish wear in places you would expect it for an issued weapon.  All of the factory stampings and U.S. Military stampings are in excellent shape, crisp and clear.  The bore in this Model 620-A is bright and clean with no pitting or imperfections.  The original checkered Walnut stock set is in great shape overall, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs, and showing only light wear and minor handling marks.  All of the controls on this Stevens riot gun are in perfect working order.  The action is slick and locks up into battery perfectly, and the gun takes down easily and goes back together perfectly tight (the take-down design is one of the best ever devised in our opinion).  This U.S. Military Stevens Model 620-A would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Military or World War 2 weapons collection and is certainly one of the hardest of the U.S. Military riot shotgun models to find.
