Description:
This Colt Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver is serial number 6426 and found in lot 6 and inspected by Ainsworth. This Colt is a Custer Range example and interestingly enough this gun was found/located in Canada. Kopec writes "The "word of mouth" historical information which we have recieved is that this revolver (#6426 was found in Canada. It is a known fact that the Sioux Indians had migrated into Canada immediately after the Custer Battle. Another example #6429 was also located in Canada approximately thirty-five miles north of the Montana border at a known location to have been used by the fleeing Sioux after the famous Custer Battle. It is therefore possible that the subject revolver could have been found at one of these Sioux Camp locations. More specific information regarding where and when this revolver had been located would certainly be beneficial to the Custer historian or collector." Earlier in the letter Kopec states "There is certainly a very good probability that the subject revolver had also been one of these primary issues to the Seventh Cavalry at that time." At the end of the letter Kopec makes a claim not often found in letters on "Custer Range" SAA's, he states It is my opinion that this revolver had been captured by the Sioux, prior to being lost in Canada, therefore it has remained to this day in its original Cavalry configuration." The revolver itself is a great specimen and example of a Colt Single Action from an excellent and extremely historic range. The mechanical function is excellent. Kopec states the condition has at some point of time in the past been correctly cleaned. Kopec also states, "In looking over this revolver, we have noted the replaced grips, base pin and ejector rod assembly. These metal components were found unserviceable, and the grips were burnt from this revolver. These replacements are in my opinion legitimate as long as they are disclosed. We have noted that the base pin screw was at some time in the past removed by sawing a deep slot into the frame. A correct style base pin screw was subsequently fitted into this area. The loading gate has no "bin" number and may also be a replacement from an earlier revolver. (under serial number 1000)." Overall this is a very Historic Colt Single Action Army Revolver that has more of a probabilty of being there then other known and documented "Custer Range" examples.
