Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1873 TRAPDOOR Rifle
The Original .45-70 GOVT Made Circa 1874
Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured circa 1874. This was the first trapdoor Springfield to be chambered for the powerful and famous .45-70 GOVT cartridge. The trapdoor rifle was the primary weapon in the U.S. military from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19th Century, encompassing the Indian Wars and even the Spanish-American War in Cuba.
The lock is marked “EAGLE/US/SPRINGFIELD”. The top of the trapdoor is marked “MODEL/1873/EAGLE/US”. The top of the butt plate is marked “U” with an additional number “11”, probably a rack number.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have 50% of their original finish. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape with the handling marks you would expect. The bore is in very good condition, clean with sharp rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent. A fabulous Indian Wars era US rifle!
