Description:
Rare Colt 1862 Pocket of Navy Caliber, 5-shot 38 Rimfire, Conversion, Type 3, having the 4.5" octagon barrel, Type A frame (loading gate with internal spring but no ejector rod and "COLTS PATENT" on the left side of the frame) and small hammer screw. What makes this one really interesting is that it falls in the first serial number range (from #1 to #13825) where typically the Pocket Police models were used and the Types 1, 2, 6 and 7 predominate; but, there exists in the Colt records a "test run" of 665 Type 3 guns between serial #s 4224 and 4953. This is one of those, being serial # 4701, with the number matching on the grip, frame, trigger guard and barrel, partial # 701 on the cylinder, and matching assembly number 4853 on the loading gate and cylinder arbor. Shipment of these "test run" guns took place in September 1872 before the use of the 2 line patent stamping (typically the Type 3 conversions were built on Type B frames and have the 2 line patent dates on the left side of the frame). Also there were patent infringements involved with the internal spring loading gate, so this shipment is the only one of the Type 3 guns that will have the internal spring and "COLTS PATENT" on the frame as production ceased until the new patent was obtained. All of this information is obtained from the book "Variations of Colt's New Model Police & Pocket Breech Loading Pistols" by Breslin, Pirie and Price, which I highly recommend if you don't have it already.
Condition: Original walnut grips are near new with only a few minor dings and very light bottom edge wear. Frame and hammer retain about 15% original finish, mostly patina, with some muted traces of the original case colors. Cylinder retains 95% of the original roll-engraved cylinder scene and about 30% of the original finish turned to patina. Barrel has 60% original finish remaining, being a mostly dark blue with some patina. Bore has sharp rifling with scattered black powder fouling and should clean better. Hammer spring is very strong and locks tightly at full both positions. Cylinder has very positive clicks, no wobble at all, locks up tight as a drum. Screw slots are sharp with no damage and, except for the trigger guard to frame screw, show no signs of ever being touched by a screwdriver. Overall Antique Fine. If you have any interest in this one at all, don't hesitate to contact me as it is not going to last long!!
