Description:
Serial #974 / 9245, 18 x 25mm RF, 40" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a conversion of the Model 1842 percussion musket using the Milbank-Amsler “trapdoor" system. The barrel has a cleaned, armory bright finish that has an overall pewter gray patina, and evenly spread spots of plum-brown freckling along the entire length. The barrel bands, receiver/breechblock assembly, trigger guard, and the rear half of the lockplate have an old added blue finish that also has spots of plum-brown freckling throughout. The front half of the lockplate (which is marked with a partially legible maker’s name, possibly “P. EMALH[?]") is in the white, and was reshaped from the original squared-nose profile to a more conventional round-nosed shape in order to fit the non-original stock. The stock itself is in very good condition with numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes throughout, and has deeply stamped “BRAUEREI STADTBÜHL" markings, as well as an illegible round stamp, and “C.St.G." cartouche. The Brauerei Stadbühl is a small, independent brewery in Gossau, Switzerland, that was founded in 1858, and is still in business today. This rifle was probably used by a competitive shooter either sponsored, or employed by the brewery, and is a neat example of a very early cartridge conversion that is rarely seen in the United States.
