This little Italian Military carbine started life in 1918 as a full size Model 1891 Carcano rifle made by Terni. After service in World War 1 sometime between 1924 and 1929 the Italian Military took 260,000 of the Model 1924 rifles and converted them to the T.S. Carbine pattern, including this one. To do the conversion the barrel was cut down and recrowned, and the stock was cut down to the carbine dimensions. Any part that showed wear or damage was replaced and the carbines went into service. These reworked carbines were designated the Model 91/24 T.S. Carbine, and they are easily recognized from other carbine variations by the standard size rifle sight being retained on the carbine. The Model 91/24 went on to serve the Italian Military thru World War 2 and proved to be a good service weapon. This particular carbine is not import marked and appears to be all original except for the bolt, which obviously has been with the carbine for many decades but is not matching numbered. The bolt likely was put into it when the carbine conversion was done in the 1920's, the Italians were not known to bother with re-numbering parts like the Germans. It is very likely that this Terni carbine came back as a war trophy with an American G.I. who fought in Africa or Italy during WW2. It is very interesting that this weapon likely served in two wars, first as a rifle in the closing months of World War 1, then as a carbine with the Fascist Italians in World War 2 (and maybe even with the Germans after the Italians surrendered). As you can see from the pictures, there is very little blue finish left on this carbine, but it has a nice battle-used look to it. The bore is dark but does show shiny lands, and should shoot just fine if the new owner so chooses. The original stock is in good shape overall, free from any major damage or cracks. There is one small repair of some wood filler behind the bolt, and all of the stock hardware including the barrel bands, original cleaning rod, and buttplate are intact and in good shape. The original Italian Military cartouche is still visible but faint on the left side of the butt, and the serial number stamped into the left side of the butt matches the gun. All of the controls on this Model 91/24 Carbine are in perfect working order, and the bolt works smoothly and turns into battery without any slop. If you have been looking for an interesting and original military rifle to add to your collection, this 1918 dated Terni Model 91/24 Carbine would be a great choice. It is not often that we encounter these without import marks and weapons that have served in both WW1 and WW2 are hard to come by.
