4) VERY RARELY SEEN STEVENS IDEAL ENGLISH MODEL RIFLE No. 044-1/2 IN .25-20 S.S. (SINGLE SHOT) CALIBER, #2XXX, MADE FROM 1903-1916. This model was made on the strong 44 ½ action and is distinguishable by the 26” rapid taper half octagon barrel and shotgun butt with Stevens embossed hard rubber butt plate. The “English Model” was made in limited numbers in rim fire calibers and in .25-20 and .32-20 center fire calibers. Examples are few and far between. This is a really fine rifle with nearly all the deep blue remaining on the barrel. The receiver retains cloudy-gray case color with some better color toward the rear of the action and on top around the hammer. Matching serial number on the barrel and receiver, excellent stock and forend with a little fancier than standard grade walnut and tight wood to metal fit, excellent bore, correct Rocky Mountain blade/bead front sight, buckhorn rear sight with optional sporting tang sight. Tight action, as would be expected on a 44 ½ receiver, sharp markings. It’s also good to know that .25-20 Single Shot brass is now fairly readily available. This is truly a wonderful little sporting rifle that is seldom encountered especially in a center fire caliber.
