Description:
This is a top-of-the-line vintage custom varmint /benchrest rifle built by Herb's Custom Shop likely sometime in the late 1980's.  It is chambered in .223 Remington and is based on a 1970's vintage Remington 700 action.  Only the very best components were used including a stainless steel heavy varmint profile Hart barrel, an adjustable Jewell trigger, and a reworked factory Remington 40X stock that was glassed and bedded to the action.  As you can see from the pictures, this custom rifle is in excellent condition overall and has a perfect bore.  The stainless steel 24" heavy varmint Hart barrel features a beautiful 60-degree recessed target crown and a twist rate of 1 in 12" inches.  The rifling in this barrel still looks new, with sharp lands and grooves and no visible imperfections, erosion, or pitting.  The barrel is free-floated from 3 inches ahead of the receiver to the end of the stock.  The original 40X barrel tensioners in the forearm of the stock were removed and plugged with .38 Special brass for a unique look.  The jeweled bolt is beautiful and slick as glass when worked, it really has to be felt to truly appreciated.  The bolt has been lapped and fit to the receiver with perfection, and turns into battery precisely with no wiggle or slop.  A single shot adapter was fit to the action from machined and polished aluminum alloy.  It is perfectly fit to the lower opening on the action.  The Jewell trigger on this rifle is spectacular, breaking like a thin glass rod at it's current setting with a feather-light pull with no grit, excessive travel, or drag of any kind.  Like the action, the trigger has to be felt in person to really understand how exceptional it is.  The Remington 40X stock has been customized/modified in several ways in addition to the barrel tensioners removal mentioned earlier.  The original hand-stop rail has been removed and the slot it was mounted in filled with a Walnut plug to match the stock, and the magazine housing has been filled in the same way, as this rifle has been set up in a single-shot configuration (the single shot adapter mentioned above is supported by the Walnut plug fit to the magazine well recess).  The lower sling swivel stud hole was filled in the same way as the barrel tensioners, except with a .22 rimfire case to fit the smaller hole.  The interior of the stock was expertly glassed and hand-finished to fit the action and first 3 inches of the barrel perfectly.  This action is perfectly supported and tightly secured to this stock.  To finish out the stock work, a "White Line" spacer and thin pad were fit to the stock making the length of pull 13.5" inches, and the whole stock was given a coating of clearcoat.  This vintage custom rifle appears to have had a very easy life.  The original factory blue finish on the receiver is still bright and glossy and only shows some very minor finish wear, mainly on the high edges.  The exterior of the stainless steel Hart barrel is also very clean and attractive, with "Herb's Custom Shop" and ".223 Remington" stamped on the left side.  All of the controls are in perfect working order on this rifle, and we have no doubt it will shoot just as well today as when it was new.  This rifle comes with a set of Leupold bases and 1" inch rings already mounted up on it.  All it lacks is optics to head to the range or woods.  This is an extremely nice vintage custom rifle from a well-known maker who has a reputation for building rifles that flat-out shoot!!  This custom Remington would be an excellent varmint rifle and long range toy, as well as a superb benchrest target rifle. To build a rifle of this caliber today would cost several thousand dollars, and that is if you can find someone with high level of skill that doesn't have a waiting list of many months or more. If you want to add a unique vintage custom rifle to your collection that will out-shoot your friends or bust coyotes at 200 yards, this Herb's Custom Shop Remington 700 would be an excellent choice.
