JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA Antique Half Stock Long Rifle
Midwestern Long Rifle by S. GOLDEN!
Here we present an antique Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle by S. Golden, made circa the 1859 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Jeffersonville is just across the river from Louisville, Kentucky. This is one of those makers whose work is rarely come across.
This rifle features a half stock and a star and moon on each side of the stock. The lock is marked “E. MIDDLETON”. The top of the barrel is marked “S. GOLDEN/JEFFERSONVILLE”. S. Golden is listed as a gun smith in Jeffersonville in the G.W. Hawes’ Indiana State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1858 & 1859. The stock has been decorated with sheets of brass and is marked “WCH” and “1859” on the left side plate. The octagonal barrel is .30 caliber. The front sight is a small piece of bone.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts retain their original finish with a dark patina making up the balance. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is clean with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. This is a really neat example of a long rifle that would have been prime for taking small game for the family dinner table!
