Description:
An exceptional example of the rare Charles F. Galand 1868 revolver in 12mm Perrin caliber. The self extracting Galand revolver is a famous though scarce example of handgun evolution due to the advent of metalic cartridges in the second half of the 19th century.

The model 1868 Galand was an early breech loading military size revolver, one of the first practical large bore breech loading centerfire cartridge revolvers. A great point of interest is its unique trigger guard activated extraction system whereby the trigger guard acts as a powerful lever to move barrel and cylinder forward on the cylinder arbor while acting on the extractor ring to remove cartridge cases from the cylinder. In the early days of soft copper cartridge cases, which had a tendency to stick in revolver chambers, a powerful extraction mechanism could be very important in battle. Galand revolvers were used by the French, the Russian Navy, and the Romanian government. This Model 1868 12 mm Galand revolver has 4 7/8"(125 mm) barrel marked on its left flat ahead of the cylinder, "C.F.Galand, Invr. Brevete", and bears proper Liege proofmarks.

C. F. Galand is well listed as a gun manufacturer in Paris, France, 1865-1890, and in Liege Belgium, 1870-1890. The Galand patent revolver was a very finely made firearm. Its design requires expert machining of close fitting mechanical elements. The Galand revolver is also very well finished and was an impressive firearm when new. Its large bore centerfire metallic cartridge and its ability to function in deserts, jungles, and other tough environments appealed to military and naval officers and others headed for remote outposts of empire. These attributes may well account for its rarity today and the fact that that very few Galand 12 mm Model 1868 revolvers are seen in anything other than heavily used, often heavily pitted condition. A Model 1868 Galand retaining decent amounts of original finish is a rarity. It is reputed that Col. George Custer carried Galand type revolvers at the Little Big Horn battle.

CONDITION: This quite exceptional 12 mm Galand revolver retains 98%+ of its original nickel finish with some very light handling marks and lovely patina. All markings contours, etc. are crisp. Mechanical function is excellent and tight as new. The multi-groove rifled bore is in excellent as new condition  - the revolver shows no evidence of use. The original checkered walnut grips are in excellent / new condition retaining all their original finish.

This handsome and impressive Galand 1868 revolver is an example of 'best-of-its-type' for collectors and would be very difficult to up-grade. This remarkable Galand has been in a private collection since 1990.

Considerable information on Galand and his revolver may be found in; "The Revolver 1861-1888", by A.W.F. Taylorson, Bopnanza Books, and through internet research.
