Description:
A high-condition, graded J.P. Sauer 16-gauge hammergun with fluid steel barrels is rare.  Sauer built some guns for the American market in the early 20th century, primarily field grade guns.  However, a well-engraved hammergun with metric barrel dimensions and a Circasian walnut stock, such as this gun, probably came to the US with a returning WWII veteran.

The side-lock action is a beautiful piece of machinery with each part precisely milled and hand fitted.  The condition of the wood is excellent, behind the side locks as well as what it visible.  The checking is good, as cleaned.  The receiver retains significant case color and the engraving is crisp.  The bores of the 75cm Krupp fluid steel barrels are bright and the exteriors of the barrels are flawless as refinished.  Other signs of quality include a nicely engraved steel grip cap, Greener cross-bolt, and the detailing of the top rib.

This gun weighs only 6 pounds 6 ounces and has modern shooting dimensions.  The chambers are 65mm (2-5/8”).  The right barrel is choked LM (.009) and the left IM (.017).  The diameters of both bores 9” from the breech are .669, and the outside diameters of both barrels at the muzzle are .750.  The wall thicknesses of the right barrels at 9” from the muzzle are .034/.035/.033 (top/side/bottom), and at the middle of the barrel are .037/.040/.042.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .030/.032/.035 and .035/.037/.040. respectively.  This level of precision reflects the original quality of German manufacturing and suggests subsequent limited use.  The drop at the comb is 1-3/4” and at the heel 2-5/8”.  The length of pull to the horn buttplate is 13-3/4”.  The triggers both pull at 5 pounds.  The gun locks up tight.  All serial numbers, 111202, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired on the range on a number of occasions using standard target loads.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing.  The gun carries a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and all shipping costs.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook at 703-625-4830.
