Description:
Winchester Model 1886 rifle in the standard configuration of 26" octagon barrel, full magazine and crescent butt. Serial # 62593 was applied on September 26, 1891, warehoused on October 30, 1891, and shipped on November 3, 1891 to order number 14349. Copy of Cody Museum email sheet will accompany rifle to buyer. One of a handful that I am listing that I just acquired from a local estate - previous owner purchased this rifle in 1958 so it has been tucked away for 61 years!!
CONDITION: Barrel retains 75% bright original blue toning to plum. Mag tube has mostly silvered out but retains some original bright blue turning plum in the protected areas up by the barrel. Receiver retains 15% original case colors with all of the case colors remaining on the upper tang underneath the tang sight and no extra holes drilled there thank goodness, hammer 50% original case colors, and butt plate & fore end cap are a bright nickelly-silver with traces of the original case colors. Lever has silvered out and has some surface oxidation. Original walnut stocks are very good, no extra holes, no splits, no cracks, never sanded or refinished, tight and proud, showing normal handling marks. Bore is very good with strong, consistent rifling and light minor roughness, an 7 of 10. Action is tight and hammer spring strong. Half cock safety functions as it should. Correct original rear sight is intact with correct elevator. Have a competent gunsmith check it over before firing. Very nice collector and shooter grade Model 1886 rifle. Grades NRA Antique Very Good.
EXTRAS: Rifle is equipped with a Lyman 1A combination tang sight, correctly coded "N" on the underside of the base, functions properly in all aspects, retains 85% bright blue on base, with the knurled piece and the stem being a dark patina/plum mix. Front sight is an original Beech combination with loop bent but intact, post intact, and top bead intact, retaining 10% of the original gold wash with the balance a dark patina. Neither of these sights are mentioned in the factory info but have been on the rifle since day 1 judging by wear and condition of the sights and surrounding parts of the rifle. These would bring about $600 themselves if sold separately!!
